Virtual Library DTIC® is exploring new information technologies to make a variety of digital materials available to its user communities through a Defense Virtual Library (DVL). These materials may include textual materials such as technical reports and electronic journals, plus maps, videos, photographs, sound, spatial data, architectural drawings, computer programs, instructional materials and possibly medical imagery. DTIC will store some of the materials in its own repository and also provide links to remote sites when linking is the best way to deliver the information. Seamless searching across diverse resources will be provided. The Defense Virtual Library will offer search engines that will serve the needs of both professional intermediaries and end users. Security issues will be addressed, protecting data from both unauthorized access or inappropriate disclosure and ensuring data integrity. The Defense Virtual Library project is being pursued in partnership with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and with the Corporation for National Research Initiatives (CNRI). (See CNRI's account of their work with DTIC on the Defense Virtual Library.) CNRI is a non-profit research and development organization formed in 1986 to help focus US strengths in information processing technology and has an ongoing research program into virtual libraries. DARPA is promoting development by providing the counsel of its digital library programs manager. DTIC's user communities include managers,
information intermediaries, scientists, engineers, and students, representing
DoD or other government agencies, contractors, and in some cases, the
general public. Each type of user requires different types of information
and different tools to discover, retrieve, and use this information. Excessive
amounts of dollars and time are expended each year in search of information.
By providing quick, seamless access to information regardless of its format,
location, or security classification, DTIC will not only save its customers
dollars and time, but also will make information readily available to
them in a format they can use.
