NIAAA Vision

Research and Education will:

  • Remove the stigma associated with the common complex disease alcoholism

  • Reveal genetic, other biological, and sociocultural origins of variations in individual responses to alcohol and the consequent risks and benefits of alcohol to health

  • Develop effective prevention and treatments that address

    - the physical, behavioral, and social risks attributable to excessive and underage alcohol consumption; and
    - the chronic relapsing nature of alcoholism

  • Improve the acceptance of, and access to, quality care
