The Center for Faith-Based & Community Initiatives

Overview of the HHS Grants Process

Please note that documents in PDF format require Adobe's Acrobat Reader

The President's initiative is about leveling the playing field by removing barriers to the full participation of faith-based and community-based organizations so they have equal opportunity to participate in federally funded programs.

Please note that there is no grant money specifically set aside for faith-based providers, nor will there be a separate fund established from the HHS Center.

HHS discretionary grants are awarded competitively in response to program announcements and other requests for proposals or applications published by the Department in either the Federal Register, the HRSA Preview, or the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts.

Other funding sources are often available through your state, county, or city. A majority of HHS program dollars are sent directly to your Governor's office, state department of human services, or state health department for distribution. In addition to public sources, funding may be available from national and local private foundations and corporations.

  • Grants Guide [PDF - 16 MB]: This guide provides information on HHS grant opportunities for faith-based (FBO) and community-based (CBO) organizations. Each program has been rated according to the type of opportunity it presents to these small grassroots organizations.
  • Funding Opportunities by Topic Area: This link contains information about some of the federal grant programs which are open to faith-based and community groups.
  • How to Apply for a grant from HHS: This link provides general grant information from an HHS perspective.
  • HHS Principal Granting Agencies: This link provides general agency and grant office contact information for HHS funding agencies
  • Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA): The CFD is a government-wide compendium of all 1,499 Federal programs, projects, services, and activities that provide assistance or benefits to the American public.
