The Center for Drug Evaluation
and Research is America's consumer watchdog for medicine. Its
best-known job is to evaluate new drugs for safety and effectiveness
before they can be sold. The center also:
- watches for drug problems once a drug is approved for sale,
- monitors drug information and advertising to make sure it
is accurate and complete,
- protects drug quality and set manufacturing standards and
- conducts applied research focusing on laboratory research
and testing.

FDA. With a work force of about 800, the center promotes and
protects the public health and economic interest by ensuring

- Food is safe, nutritious and wholesome, and cosmetics are
safe.
- Food and cosmetics are honestly, accurately and informatively
labeled.
To achieve these goals, the center
strives to be a leader in food safety, protect consumers from
economic fraud, promote sound nutrition, and encourage innovation.
The center is divided into several offices dealing with:
- cosmetics and colors
- food labeling
- plant and dairy foods and beverages
- premarket approval
- seafood
- special nutritionals, such as dietary supplements and infant
formula.
