The counter-terrorism strategy, implemented by the Department of Justice after September 11, 2001, includes the development of an Anti-Terrorism Advisory Committee (ATAC). The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia has designated an experienced law enforcement official and senior prosecutors to serve as the Anti-Terrorism Coordinators for the District of Columbia's ATAC. The USAO/DC Anti-Terrorism Coordinators have developed communication methods to ensure the prompt exchange of anti-terrorism information, urgent alerts, change to the National Threat Advisory Level, etc. As needed, these coordinators meet with representatives from federal, state and local law enforcement agencies and emergency services agencies. This committee, chaired by the United States Attorney for each judicial district, is part of a national network that coordinates the dissemination of information throughout the country.
The efforts of the ATAC are aided by the Transnational and Major Crimes Section (TNMC) of the U.S. Attorney's Office, which focuses upon terrorism attacks and threats to U.S. citizens across the globe as well as within the District of Columbia. In conjunction with the Washington Field Office of the FBI, the TNMC Section investigates and prosecutes murders, hostage takings and attacks against United States citizens in nearly every part of the world, ranging from far east Asia to South America to Pakistan to the Middle East and Europe.
