U.S. Department of Homeland Security Issues First Radiological and Nuclear Detectors Standards

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Science and Technology division today adopted its first radiological and nuclear detectors standards.  The standards were developed in partnership with the Department's Office of Domestic Preparedness.  These standards are designed to assist federal agencies, state and local officials, and manufacturers in procurement decisions related to radiological and nuclear detection equipment.

The Department of Homeland Security, through its Science and Technology division, has adopted the following standards for radiation and nuclear detection equipment.  The standards, which are outlined below, were developed in partnership with the Department's Office of Domestic Preparedness; the Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology; the Department of Energy's National Laboratories; the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

U.S. Department of Homeland Security Begins the Repatriation of Haitian Migrants to Haiti

Today the U.S. Coast Guard began repatriating Haitian migrants directly back to Haiti. The safe repatriation of approximately 530 Haitian migrants is expected to be completed this afternoon.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Science and Technology division today adopted its first standards regarding personal protective equipment developed to protect first responders against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear incidents. These standards, which will assist state and local procurement officials and manufacturers, are intended to provide emergency personnel with the best available protective gear.
