Region IX - Serving AZ, CA, GUAM, HI, NV

FEMA Region IX serves the states of Arizona, California, Hawaii and Nevada, as well as the territories of American Samoa and Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia. Region IX serves a culturally diverse population in excess of 36 million people and covers 386,000 square miles with a breadth of more than 8,000 miles.

TUCSCON, AZ April 8, 2004 -- FEMA Region IX Mitigation Director Sally Ziolkowski presents PIMA County representatives with a Pre-Disaster Mitigation Competitive (PDM-C)Grant Award for $93,750 at a press conference. The county matched funds of $31,250 for a total grant award of $125,000 to the community. On hand to receive the award were Pima County Board of Supervisors members Richard Elias and Ray Carroll. Also in attendance was Dennis Douglas, director of the Pima County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security. The PDM-C Grant Program is a $26 million Presidential initiative that is administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency for pre-disaster mitigation and planning projects. ALAMEDA, Calif. - The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) raised the new DHS flag and saluted local heroes serving Bay Area DHS agencies during a first-year anniversary ceremony on Coast Guard Island March 1 at 8:00 a.m. Employees from the Coast Guard, Federal Emergency Management Agency, Secret Service, Customs and Border Protection, Immigration Customs Enforcement, Transportation Security Agency, and Citizenship and Immigration Services along with dignitaries and other guests attended the special event. Among the personnel recognized for outstanding achievements was FEMA Region IX’s Susan Waller, who was presented with an award by FEMA Region IX Deputy Regional Director, Karen Armes. Reno, NV -- Jeff Griffin, Regional Director of U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s FEMA Region IX presents $181,800 check from the 2003 Assistance to Firefighters Grant program to Representatives from the Reno Fire Department and Washoe County on February 20, 2004. To receive the check were Marty Scheurman, Operations Division Chief, Reno Fire Department , Gary Neilson, Training Division Chief, Reno Fire Department, and Bonnie Weber, County Commissioner, District 5. The grant money will be used to purchase a firefighting vehicle that will both improve services to the community and increase firefighter safety.

The grant to the Gerlach Volunteer Fire Department - Washoe County was awarded during the thirty-third round of the 2003 Assistance to Firefighters Grant program. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), a division of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), administers the Assistance for Firefighters Grant Program. The program assists rural, urban and suburban fire departments throughout the United States. A list of all current award recipients announced to date is posted on the USFA Web site. Los Angeles, CA -- FEMA Region IX Regional Director Jeff Griffin attends FEMA-sponsored events to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Northridge Earthquake, FEMA Disaster 1008.

"It's not enough to honor the memory of Northridge," Griffin noted,"we need to ask ourselves,'did we learn something?'

The events of January 16 and 17, 2004, included a conference of business leaders, elected officials, seismologists and other scientists; and an all-day earthquake fair event that included exhibits, videos, hands-on activities and lecturers. [ More Photos ]
