Mission
Recent and Planned Activities

Cancer remains the second leading cause of death among women in the United States. In 2004, an estimated 67,660 deaths in women from cancers of the breast, ovary, cervix, and endometrium are expected. It is also predicted that 292,410 new cases of these cancers in women will be diagnosed in 2004.

The Office of Science Planning and Assessment is charged with planning, assessing and coordinating the Institute's programs in Women's Health. Staff of the Office of Women's Health participate in strategic planning activities of the NCI by consulting with experts in specific areas of interest and providing technical support in order to develop and implement programs and policies which will improve the health of women. The Office collects information and provides a central information resource on scientific advances in research areas related to cancers which affect women solely or disproportionately. The Office cosponsors activities to explore, assess and report scientific progress in relevant areas.
