MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1.     Q.  I was told when I was discharged that my discharge would automatically get upgraded within six months of my discharge.  What is my status?

  A.  Discharges are not automatically upgraded.  An ex-service member must apply for a review of the discharge for a possible upgrade using the DD Form 293 application.  Upon receipt of the application, the NDRB reviews the ex-service member's service record and if the discharge is determined to be equitable and in accordance with the military regulations, an upgrade is not granted.

2.     Q.  Can NDRB change a reenlistment code?

    A.   NDRB can upgrade a discharge and change the reason for discharge but not the RE code.   The RE Code can be changed by the Board of Correction of  Naval Records, if  it was erroneously assigned.  However, the applicable military service can waive the code for re-entry in the to the service.

3.     Q.  Can NDRB provide an individual with a copy of his DD 214?

      A.  Since NDRB is not the custodian of the military service record, the Board cannot provide an individual with a copy of the DD form 214.  The individual must contact:

Personnel Records Center
