Our nation's 81 million buildings consume more energy than any
other sector of the U.S. economy, including transportation and industry.
Fortunately, the opportunities to reduce building energy useand
the associated environmental impactsare significant.
DOE's Building Technologies Program works to improve the energy
efficiency of our nation's buildings through innovative new technologies
and better building practices. The program focuses in two key areas:
- Emerging Technologies:
Research and development of the next generation of energy-efficient
components, materials, and equipment
- Technology Integration:
Integration of new technologies with innovative building methods
to optimize building performance and savings
In partnership with industry, manufacturers, national laboratories,
universities, and research groups, the Building Technologies Program
is forging a new generation of sustainable, energy-efficient buildings.
These buildings not only use less energy and cost less to operate,
they also help the environment. They decrease the need for new power
generation and reduce the harmful impact of associated carbon emissions.
They also help our nation, improving our energy security as well
as our everyday lives, making our homes, schools, and businesses
more comfortable places to live, learn, work, and play.
