DeLay: Return of the Goldilocks Economy SUGAR LAND, Texas — House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas) today praised President Bush and the Republican Congress’s handling of the national economy, which has led to steady and reliable job creation for the last several months. “We’re returning to a 'Goldilocks economy' that is growing just right,” DeLay said. “The economy is growing at a fast pace and creating new jobs, but not so fast as to burn itself out. “After 112,000 jobs created last month, more Americans are employed today than at any time in history, yet inflation and interest rates stay low,” DeLay said. “In other words, the Republican tax relief and economic growth plan is working.” The economic numbers released today show the economy is strong and steady, with 366,000 jobs added over the last five months. The current 5.6 percent unemployment rate is below the average of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. - Average unemployment rate during the 1970s: 6.2 percent - Average unemployment rate during the 1980s: 7.3 percent - Average unemployment rate during the 1990s: 5.8 percent |
