SAN FRANCISCO (NNS) -- Nearly 150 Sailors were recognized at an MVP luncheon during San Francisco Fleet Week Oct. 10. The luncheon, sponsored by the "Friends of The Fleet Foundation," was held at the San Francisco City Hall downtown.

Sailors attached to USS Tarawa (LHA 1), USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52), USS Momsen (DDG 92), USS John Paul Jones (DDG 52), USS Jarrett (FFG 13), USCGC Alert (WMEC 630), and Canadian ships HMCS Brandon (MCDV 710), HMCS Edmonton (MCDV 703) and HMCS Nanaimo (MCDV 702), were recognized for their hard work and dedication to naval service.

“This is for the young people that go out of their way to show leadership, commitment and goals, that support and take care of our nation,” said Anna Falche, founder, Friends of The Fleet Foundation. “The Sailors are the greatest heroes in the world.”

The MVP luncheon was one of many appreciation events given for Sailors during San Francisco Fleet Week. Each ship provided names of Sailors from the crew whom they thought deserved to be recognized as outstanding individuals. The San Francisco City Hall, complete with its lavish golden structure and historical monuments, played host to the luncheon and added a luxurious setting to the event. Many Sailors were in awe at the beautiful structure, and were appreciative of being recognized for their accomplishments.

“I am glad that they put this function together for us, not just for senior personnel but for junior personnel, as well,” said Damage Controlman (SW/AW) 1st Class Marco Vides, Senior Sailor of the Year for LSD 52 and Senior Sailor of the Year for Commander, Amphibious Group 3. “I am quite sure that they will take this back to the ship and let the crew know that yes, there are civilians and senior military who appreciate what we do on a daily basis,” said Vides.

The MVP luncheon was started this year and will be held annually to acknowledge the top performers from the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps.

“It’s an opportunity for all of us to thank the Navy for the efforts that they give us,” said Steve Ware, member, Friends of the Fleet Foundation. “A lot of people thank them, and this is one way that we can do it, and God bless them.”

San Francisco Fleet Week was held Oct. 9-12.
