Special note: Because of very limited parking and tight security on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) campus, we encourage you to take advantage of public transportation and the shuttle we will provide from the Bethesda Marriott Hotel. (The shuttle will also stop at the Medical Center Metro on Sunday. Please see more information below.)

If you decide to drive to campus, please keep in mind the following: All vehicles are inspected before they enter onto the campus. All visitors must present picture identification (i.e., drivers license, passport, Government or military identification) and go through a personal property inspection (purses, briefcases, backpacks, etc.) to enter the Cloister. Please allow plenty of time because inspection areas can be very congested early in the morning. The Washington , DC , area is served by three major airports—Reagan Washington National, Dulles International, and Baltimore-Washington International.

Via Metrorail to NIH:

Metrorail service is available from Reagan Washington National Airport and from Union Station (railway).

  • From National Airport , board a Yellow Line train (marked Mt. Vernon Square ), and transfer to a Red Line train (marked Shady Grove) at the Gallery Place-Chinatown station. Exit the train at the Medical Center Metro stop.
  • From Union Station, board a Red Line train marked Shady Grove or Grosvenor. Exit the train at the Medical Center Metro stop.

The station's escalators come out on the NIH campus.

To the Bethesda Marriott Hotel:

The Bethesda Marriott Hotel offers shuttle service from the hotel to the Medical Center Metro station. The shuttle service stop is located across the street from the Metro station in the area designated as "Kiss and Ride." The shuttle runs every 30 minutes between 6:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. during the week, and 8 a.m. to noon and 3:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. during the weekends.

 

Shuttle Service from the Bethesda Marriott to the Cloister:

A shuttle bus from the Bethesda Marriott Hotel at Pooks Hill will be available on Sunday, July 11 at 9 a.m. ; Monday, July 12 at 7 a.m. ; and Tuesday, July 13 at 7 a.m. for all attendees. A Medicine in the Media sign will be displayed in the bus window. Shuttle bus service will be provided from the Cloister to the Bethesda Marriott at the conclusion of the symposium.

Shuttle Service from the Medical Center Metro to the Cloister:

A shuttle bus from the Medical Center Metro to the Cloister will be available on Sunday, July 11 at 9:15 a.m. ; Monday, July 12 at 7:15 a.m. ; and Tuesday, July 13 at 7:15 a.m. for all attendees. A Medicine in the Media sign will be displayed in the bus window. Shuttle bus service will be provided from the Cloister to the Medical Center Metro at the conclusion of the symposium.


Driving Directions to NIH:

Please note: Visitor parking is extremely limited at NIH; if at all possible, take public transportation. There is a Metro station on the NIH campus with accessible shuttle bus service to the main buildings. Short-term metered parking and long-term attendant-controlled parking are available to visitors at a cost of $2 per hour for the first 3 hours or $12 per day. Please click the links below for additional information:

From Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI):

Take the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (295) south toward Washington , DC . At I-495 (the Capital Beltway), head west toward Silver Spring/Bethesda. From the Beltway (I-495), take Exit 34, which is Route 355 (Wisconsin Avenue/Rockville Pike), and head south toward Washington/Bethesda. Follow the signs to the designated entrances for visitor access.

From Dulles International Airport :

Head east on the Dulles Airport Access Road for approximately 13 miles. Exit onto I-495 (the Capital Beltway), heading north to Bethesda/Baltimore. From the Beltway (I-495), take Exit 34, which is Route 355 (Wisconsin Avenue/Rockville Pike), and head south toward Washington/Bethesda. Follow the signs to the designated entrances for visitor access.

From Reagan Washington National Airport :

Head north on the George Washington Parkway for approximately 5 miles. Exit onto I-495 (the Capital Beltway), and head north to Maryland . From the Beltway (I-495), take Exit 34, which is Route 355 (Wisconsin Avenue/Rockville Pike), and head south toward Washington/Bethesda. Follow the signs to the designated entrances for visitor access.


From Baltimore and All Points North of Washington , DC :

Take I-95 south toward Washington , DC . At I-495 (the Capital Beltway), head west toward Silver Spring/Bethesda. From the Beltway (I-495), take Exit 34, which is Route 355 (Wisconsin Avenue/Rockville Pike), and head south toward Washington/Bethesda. Follow the signs to the designated entrances for visitor access.

OR

Take I-95 south toward Washington , DC . At I-495 (the Capital Beltway), head west toward Silver Spring/Bethesda. From the Beltway (I-495), take Exit 36 ( Old Georgetown Road ), and head south for about 2 miles. Follow the signs to the designated entrances for visitor access.


From Virginia and All Points South of Washington , DC :

Take I-95 north toward Washington , DC . At I-495 (the Capital Beltway), head north toward Silver Spring/Bethesda. From the Beltway (I-495), take Exit 34, which is Route 355 (Wisconsin Avenue/Rockville Pike), and head south toward Washington/Bethesda. Follow the signs to the designated entrances for visitor access.

OR
