Landmine Information

When US servicemembers deploy, landmines are one of the hazards they may encounter. In many countries, landmines remain from civil and international conflicts which have taken place there. Kuwait spent $128 million to remove two million landmines after the Gulf War. In Afghanistan alone, it is estimated that there are approximately 10 million landmines after 23 years of war.

In December 2001, a US serviceman lost a foot after stepping on a landmine while clearing Bagram airbase north of Kabul. Also in December, three Marines were injured when one stepped on an explosive device during a search for landmines and booby traps at Kandahar airport.

In this portion of DeploymentLINK, we present information about landmines and what DoD training is available for servicemembers to protect themselves. This presentation is intended to educate servicemembers, their families, and the general public about this operational health threat.
