The library maintains around 130,000 volumes of information of interest to the Navy, such as naval and general history, naval architecture and shipbuilding, naval customs and traditions, uniforms, awards and music, etc. The library also has an index by subject matter of Navy publications and instructions, the Consolidated Subject Index, and a Marine Corps directives system checklist of directives distributed outside Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps.

The Navy Department Library now has a substantial amount of information available via its website at http://www.history.navy.mil/library including an online catalog of library holdings.
