Cultural Resources Diversity Initiative
Over the past few decades, the historic preservation field has expanded into the preservation of culturally diverse historic properties and embraces many more groups and individuals than was the case in the mid-1960s. However, despite significant advances in reflecting all aspects of the nation's history, the historic preservation movement has suffered from a lack of minority professionals and activists who identify themselves as "preservationists" and who participate in preservation activities at all levels of government and in the private sector. Opportunities must be created to increase the number of minorities in this field. However, because of the relatively small number of minorities who currently work as preservationists and the relatively large commitment to education and experience needed in order to work in historic preservation, the complexion of the preservation field will not change markedly in the near future. The challenge is to lay the foundation for significant change in the demographics of the historic preservation field over a decade or two.
