Intern Program
After OIS, Student Program participants may request internships at one of the Navy's Legal Service offices, Trial Service offices. Interns perform the usual duties of law clerks and earn the same salary and allowances as ensigns on active duty. In addition to salary, interns receive a per diem allowance for food and lodging if performing legal work away from home. Availability and duration of assignments are subject to annual funding determinations.

Naval Justice School
All JAG Corps officers attend the Naval justice School, located in Newport, prior to commencing their initial extended active duty assignment. The nine-week course of instruction prepares lawyers for the broad range of legal responsibilities they will assume as Navy judge advocates. Upon graduation, they are certified to perform duties as trial and defense counsel and as legal assistance officers.
The Naval Justice School course includes instruction in military justice-criminal procedure, criminal law, evidence, civil law, trial advocacy practical exercises, and the Moot Court Program.

The unique training program at the Naval justice School is often cited by leading judges and law professors as the model civilians should follow to obtain needed trial advocacy skills.

Initial Assignments
After graduation from Naval Justice School, you'll serve a two week indoctrination period aboard a Navy ship, then report to your first duty station. Navy JAG Corps officers have the opportunity to serve at sea with operating forces of the Navy. However, no sea duty positions are available immediately following Naval justice School. You'll normally be assigned to Naval Legal Service offices, Trial Service office, usually within the continental United States.

Opportunities for overseas assignments sometimes exist in Hawaii, Guam, Europe and Japan. Every effort will be made to assign you to the geographical area of your choice, but no guarantees can be made. During your first assignment, you'll probably work in the major areas of legal specialty in the Navy: criminal justice litigation, legal assistance to naval personnel and their dependents, administrative law and claims.
