FAEC Financial Statement Training: September 19,2000
Presidential Decision Directive (PDD) 63, May 1998, calls for a national effort to assure the security of the nation's critical infrastructures. Based on a proposal by Russell Rau, FAEC chair, the PCIE/ECIE working group on critical infrastructure assurance was established and a PCIE-wide review of critical infrastructure assurance was initiated. Internal audit can assist management by identifying areas to strengthen in the information systems security area. Accordingly, The FAEC Auditing in a Paperless Environment Committee established a subcommittee to define information system security problems and provide potential approaches, including software tools to assist in auditing information systems security. The report was published September 1999. On July 20 - 21, 1999, the PCIE Audit Committee and the FAEC sponsored this forum entitled: "Focus on the FY2000 CFO Act Audit." The agenda included a distinguished list of speakers from throughout the Federal accounting and auditing communities. This guide for assisting audit organizations in the data gathering process was recently published by the FAEC Auditing in a Paperless Environment Committee. (A Guide for Selecting Audit Work Paper Software) This report was recently published by the FAEC Auditing in a Paperless Environment Committee. The committee was created to identify ways technology can help provide more efficient and effective services for our audit clients. The report was prepared to assist organizations wanting to automate the audit work paper process. It provides criteria, perspective on others using automated systems, evaluation of four different automated products, and agency contacts enabling a support network for agencies to draw upon. The proceedings of the April 1998 Paperless Audit Conference sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency Office of Inspector General. This working group has identified audit reports, audit plans, training and conferences, points of contact, existing EC/EDI systems and other resources useful to auditors. These resources have been included in the EC/EDI page. This is a list of General Accounting Office contacts on financial audit issues. The listing presents the contacts name, telephone number and e-mail address, as well as their areas of expertise.
A working group is researching sources, methods, ways, and procedures for benchmarking -- the identification of best practices as a criterion in audits. A first step will be an inventory of prior benchmarking in audits. Both private sector and government sources will be identified.
