 NIST postdoctoral research - NIST hires about 50 postdoctoral researchers annually through the NIST/NRC Postdoctoral Research Associates Program. This national competition is administered by the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences.

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) - NIST offers 12-week fellowships for undergraduate students in science and engineering. This intensive, hands-on lab experience is designed to encourage students to pursue doctoral degrees in science and engineering.

 Student Career Experience Program (SCEP)—SCEP, commonly referred to as the work study or co-op program, provides valuable work experience, academic credit, and a paid position.
 Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP)—High-school, undergraduate, and graduate students work during the summer and during vacation breaks in a paid position and gain valuable learning experience.
 Student Volunteer Program (SVP)—The SVP provides volunteer opportunities for students at least 16 years of age in fields such as physical science, mathematics, engineering, computer science, and administration.
