DOE Office of Science Special Programs

SciDAC
The Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing (SciDAC) program was created to addressed major scientific challenges relevant to the DOE Office of Science. A number of SciDAC projects rely on the computational facilities and support provided by NERSC.

INCITE
The Innovative and Novel Computational Impact on Theory and Experiment (INCITE) program provides computational support for a small number of computationally intensive large-scale research projects that make high-impact scientific advances.

Data Archives

Climate Model Data Archives
Output from DOE supported climate models; freely available to the climate modeling community.
The Gauge Connection
A repository of gauge configurations for lattice QCD.

Projects Receiving Funding from NERSC

Cosmic Microwave Background Data Analysis
The analysis of current and anticipated CMB datasets - including both temperature and polarization anisotropies - is a significant computational challenge.
PARAllel Total Energy Code (PARATEC)
PARATEC is a package designed primarily for a massively parallel computing platform. The code performs ab-initio quantum-mechanical total energy calculations using pseudopotentials and a plane wave basis set.
Parallel total Energy (PEtot)
PEtot is a parallel plane wave pseudopotential program for atomistic total energy calculation based on density functional theory. It is designed for large system simulations to be run on parallel computers.

Internal Projects

Effective System Performance Test (ESP)
NERSC has proposed a new benchmark test that measures Effective System Performance (ESP) in a real-world operational environment.
Global Unified Parallel File System (GUPFS)
The goal of the Global Unified Parallel File System (GUPFS) Project at NERSC is to provide a scalable, high-performance, high-bandwidth, shared-disk file system for use by all of NERSC's high performance production computational systems.
Blue Planet -- Science Driven Computer Architecture
A proposal for a new program to bring into existence a new class of computational capability in the United States that is optimal for science. The proposed strategy includes development partnerships with multiple vendors, in which teams of scientific applications specialists and computer scientists will work with computer architects to create hardware and software environments that will allow scientists to extract the maximum performance and capability from the hardware.

Projects Hosted by NERSC

DOE ACTS Collection
The Advanced CompuTational Software (ACTS) collection is a set of tools that make it easier for programmers to write high performance scientific applications for parallel computers.
Performance Evaluation Research Center
The goal of this SciDAC Center is to develop a science for understanding performance of scientific applications on high-end computer systems, and develop engineering strategies for improving performance on these systems.
Search π
Search the first four billion binary digits of Pi for a string.
SCICOMP
The IBM System Scientific Computing User Group, SCICOMP, is an international organization of scientific/technical users of IBM systems.
UPC Programming Language
Unified Parallel C (UPC) is an extension of the C programming language designed for high performance computing.
