Hand to Hand: Two Grand Masters of Suzhou Embroidery
Featuring works by Gu Wenxia, Grand Master of China and
Yu Fuzhen, Grand Master of Jiangsu Province
February 19 - June 11, 2005
Hand to Hand

One of China's greatest artistic traditions, the embroideries of Suzhou, will come to the Carter Presidential Library in 2005, nearly 25 years after President Carter signed a Cultural Agreement between the United States and the People's Republic of China to recognize the importance of exchanges in the areas of the arts and culture. The collection will include 32 pieces by Gu Wenxia, Grand Master Embroiderer of China and her protégé, Yu Fuzhen, Grand Master Embroiderer of Jiangsu Province.

Grand Master Gu, as chief designer and president of the Suzhou Embroidery Research Institute, developed the design for the world-famous double-sided "Kitten Playing with Mantis." The iconic stature of this piece has been enhanced as it has become the most popular official gift from China to American Presidents. Variations of the "Kitten" design can be found at the Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace, the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library, and the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library.

The collection of unforgettable embroideries will include colorful landscapes, animals, portraits and flowers. The Carter Presidential Library & Museum will be the sole venue for this show outside China.

The Museum is open from 9 a.m.to 4:45 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 4:45 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $7.00 - Adults; $5.00 - Seniors (60+), Military, and students with IDs; Free - Children (16 and under).  Parking - Free.  The Museum is closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.
