A native of Vermillion, South Dakota Commander Martin graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from the University of Wisconsin at Lacrosse. In April 1985, after graduating from Aviation Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, FL, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy.

Commander Martin earned his Aviator wings in June 1986 and after completing the CH-46 Fleet Replacement Squadron he reported to HC-5 in Agana, Guam. While there he cruised on USS White Plains (AFS 4) twice and USNS Spica (T-AFS 9).

In 1990 he reported to HC-3 in San Diego, CA as an H-46 Fleet Replacement Squadron Instructor Pilot. While there he served as the Maintenance Material Control Officer and NATOPS Program Manager.

His next duty station was aboard USS Tripoli (LPH 10) where he performed as the Safety Officer, qualifying as Officer of the Deck Underway and Command Duty Officer.

Commander Martin then attended the Navy Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA and earned a Masters Degree in National Security Affairs, Strategic Planning.

In 1997, he reported to HC-6 in Norfolk, VA as Officer in Charge and cruised on USS Guam (LPH 9), USS Bataan (LHD 4) and USS Kearsarge (LHD 3). He next reported to HC-3 as the Chief of Naval Operations Search and Rescue Model Manager.

In 2002 Commander Martin arrived on Okinawa as the Chief of Staff for Commander Fleet Activities.
