Geospatial metadata elements for geodetic data were developed by NOAA, National Geodetic Survey, using the "Content Standards for Digital Geospatial Metadata", FGDC, version: 19940608. In order to follow the format scheme of these geodetic data elements, it will be necessary to follow the formats in the above mentioned FGDC publication.

Geospatial Metadata elements for geodetic data were presented to the Federal Geodetic Control Subcommittee (FGCS), FGDC on August 16, 1994 with final comments due by September 15, 1994. The final version was provided to FGDC on October 1, 1994 for their National Geospatial Data Clearinghouse for nationwide accessibility in accordance with Executive Order 12906. The latest update to this metadata profile was on Dec. 1, 1997
