Greetings on behalf of all the members on the Subcommittee. The Subcommittee was created in 1999 to provide advice/recommendations to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on their public health activities at the Department of Energy Oak Ridge Reservation. The Subcommittee members are citizens that live in communities surrounding the Oak Ridge Reservation and bring a range of viewpoints based on our different backgrounds, interests, and expertise. The Subcommittee operates through several work groups with open membership so that any member of the public can participate in developing its recommendations. Our mission is to provide the federal agencies with advice regarding public health studies and activities relating to people who may have been exposed to radioactive and chemical emissions from the Oak Ridge Reservation. Our vision is to promote the health and well being of all residents in the communities surrounding the Oak Ridge Reservation.

ATSDR is currently conducting a public health assessment and a Health Needs Assessment on the Oak Ridge Reservation. The public health assessment examines available information about releases of hazardous substances from the Oak Ridge Reservation to identify population off the site who may have been exposed to hazardous substances at levels of health concern and to recommend follow-up public health actions or studies. The Health Education Needs Assessmentt will identify health issues, health education needs, and available health resources within the communities surrounding the Oak Ridge Reservation. We are making significant contributions to the on-going public health activities of ATSDR, and we seek to involve and communicate with community members interested in the public health activities.

Please browse our web site and gather more information about the challenging work we are doing with ATSDR concerning the Oak Ridge Reservation. We look forward to your involvement in this process.

Sincerely,
Kowetha A. Davidson Signature
