ATSDR and Its State Health Partners Issue Public Health Consultations for National Asbestos Exposure Review Sites

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), a public health agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is releasing public health consultations and fact sheets for the National Asbestos Exposure Review's (NAER) 28 "Phase 1" sites.

Public health consultations, fact sheets and media announcements are available for specific sites in the following cities:

Beltsville, MD
Denver, CO
Minneapolis, MNExit ATSDR Web site
Minot, ND

Santa Ana, CA
Weedsport, NY
West Chicago, IL

Through April 5, 2004, ATSDR and state health partners have published seven public health consultations for NAER sites. To date, all have concluded that employees at facilities that processed asbestos-contaminated vermiculite ore were exposed to elevated levels of asbestos. Members of employees' households may have been exposed to elevated levels as well, as asbestos fibers may have been carried home on employees' clothing, skin and hair.

Therefore, employees and those who lived in their homes may be at increased risk of asbestos-related diseases.

NAER is an ATSDR project examining more than 200 sites around the U.S. that received asbestos-contaminated vermiculite ore mined in Libby, Mont. through 1990. ATSDR is working closely with EPA and state health partners to determine whether a hazard to public health exists at any of the sites. Currently, ATSDR is focusing on 28 Phase 1 sites.
