One of the Department's most important tasks is
the renewal of its workforce. To provide a systematic way for acquiring and developing
entry level employees for mission-critical career fields, the Department of the Interior has developed
several occupationally-oriented Career Intern Programs. These programs ensure the
necessary analysis, planning, recruiting, training, and career enhancing activities take
place for the Department and its bureaus to attract and retain a high-quality, diverse
workforce. Listed below are Career Intern Programs that are currently in operation

Department of the Interior
Office of the Secretary
Management Intern Program
What is it?
It is an Office of the Secretary initiative to recruit, develop, and retain
diverse future leaders for Department of the Interior’s management functions. The
program includes the following functional areas: Budget Administration; Financial
Management; Contracting; Information Management; Human Resources Management; Equal
Employment Opportunity; and Policy Management.
Program Features
Interns enter the program at either the GS-5, GS-7 or GS-9 pay grade depending
on their qualifications, with a full performance level of GS-13.
Participants prepare an
Individual Development Plan (IDP) that guides their training and
assignments throughout the program, including rotational assignments through all of the
above functional areas. Interns are permanently assigned to jobs in one of the
functional areas based on their competencies, interests and the needs of the Department.

Governmentwide
Acquisition Management Intern Program
What
is it?
The
Governmentwide Acquisition Management Intern Program is a two-year
program designed to employ federal government Contract Specialists and
to develop them into procurement professionals and government business
leaders of the future. Contract Specialists buy nearly $200 billion in
goods and services for the government every year; the work they do can
have a direct influence on restoring our nation’s natural and cultural
resource legacy, stimulating economic growth, restoring and preserving
healthy lands and clean streams, safeguarding the environment,
protecting the health of Americans, caring for veterans, and supporting
our defense system.
Program
Features
Interns enter
the program at either the GS-5, GS-7 or GS-9 pay grade depending on
their qualifications, with a full performance level of GS-12.
Supervisors prepare an Individual Development Plan (IDP) for each intern
that guides their training and assignments throughout the program,
including four, six-month long rotational assignments at one of the
sponsoring government agencies. Interns are permanently assigned to jobs
in one of the sponsoring agencies.

Financial
Management Career Intern Program
What is it?
The Financial
Management Career Intern Program is a two-year program that focuses on
providing practical work experience and rotational assignments with
supplemental academic training and cross training for a broad
perspective of the Department's financial management process. The
program is designed to develop the future financial leaders at the
Department of the Interior.

Interns enter
the program at either the GS-5, GS-7 or GS-9 pay grade depending on
their qualifications, with a full performance level of GS-12.
Supervisors prepare an Individual Development Plan (IDP) for each intern
that guides their training and assignments throughout the program,
including rotational assignments through the Department's financial
offices. Interns are permanently assigned to financial management jobs
based on their competencies, interests and the needs of the Department.
