Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services

Have a Direct Influence on Health Care in America

[agency logo]

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is the Federal Agency responsible for the administration of health insurance programs for over 74 million elderly, disabled, and low-income Americans. Our job is to assure health care security for these beneficiaries by managing the expenditure of approximately $250 billion dollars per year to administer the Medicare, Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Programs. In addition to these programs, CMS also has responsibility for the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, and oversight of Medigap insurance. To provide quality service to beneficiaries throughout the country, CMS has a central office located in Baltimore with offices in Washington, DC and regional offices located in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Dallas, Kansas City, Chicago, Denver, San Francisco and Seattle.

To accomplish the ambitious task of providing access to health care for the most vulnerable populations, CMS must hire and maintain a workforce capable of meeting the needs of its beneficiaries today and in the future. CMS knows that one of the best ways to achieve this goal is to recruit students to serve in various positions throughout the Agency.

CMS offers four student programs for high school and college level students. These programs can provide the required internship experience for some degree and certificate seeking programs. They also provide general work experience, and an opportunity to put what is learned in the classroom to use in the workplace. Students from all majors and schools may apply to participate in these programs. Applications are accepted throughout the year.

  • The Stay-in-School program provides an opportunity for full-time students to assist in meeting the clerical needs of the Agency.

  • The Student Volunteer Program provides for a supervised, structured educational program that integrates classroom learning with productive work experience in a field related to a student's academic or career goals.

  • The Student Temporary Employment Program is a short-term paid internship program designed to give the student work experience. The student may or may not work in an area related to his or her major.

  • The Cooperative Education Program is a planned and progressive career-related program which provides students with the opportunity to gain appropriate experience commensurate to their academic curriculum and career goals. This program is designed to provide a source of well-trained employees for career entry into the Federal workforce. Once students have completed all degree requirements, they are eligible for conversion into the competitive service. Students are also eligible for all employee benefits while enrolled in this program.

Students can learn more about these programs and other employment opportunities by visiting our web site at www.HCFA.gov. In addition, the CMS web site provides students with an opportunity to meet current CMS employees who will be happy to discuss their educational backgrounds, and how they are using their backgrounds to pursue careers in the Government. The site also contains information about CMS's facilities and employment locations, as well as information about job benefits and the CMS employment environment.
