Department of Justice Description

The Department of Justice, headed by the Attorney General, is responsible for the provision of legal advice to the President, representation of the Executive Branch in court, investigation of federal crimes, enforcement of federal laws, operation of federal prisons, and provision of law enforcement assistance to states and local communities. The Department enforces the law and defends the interests of the United States according to the law, provides federal leadership in preventing and controlling crime, seeks just punishment for those guilty of unlawful behavior, administers and enforces the Nation's immigration laws fairly and effectively, and ensures fair and impartial administration of justice for all Americans.

Criminal Division Mission

The Criminal Division is responsible for developing, enforcing, and supervising the application of all federal criminal laws, except those specifically assigned to other divisions. The challenge, complexity, and diversity in the work of the Criminal Division make it one of the best public law offices in the land.

Student Program Details

The Criminal Division Student Program enables students from local colleges in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area to gain experience as they attend school by working part-time. The program provides maximum flexibility to both students and managers. The nature of the work does not have to be related to the student's academic goals. The Program has specific guidelines to control eligibility and encourage successful completion of courses and degrees. Students in this program are required to remain registered for classes at a college or university. These positions are hired at the GS-1 to GS-4 level, determined by individual credits earned. Students accrue paid annual and sick leave in correlation with the number of hours worked in each pay period. They are also eligible to participate in the Justice Employee Transit Savings (JETS) Program, allowing them to receive reimbursement of their commuting costs of up to $100 per month for use of public transportation such as Metrorail, Metrobus, MARC Rail and Virginia Railway Express.

Position Details

Students will have the opportunity to work alongside attorneys and paralegals in the Division as they work on some of the most notorious cases. Opportunities exist throughout seventeen sections and offices, including the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property, Counter-terrorism, Domestic Security and Narcotic and Dangerous Drug Sections, to name a few. Duties assigned to students include general administrative or clerical work, but may include opportunities to assist with trial preparation, legal research and writing.

Application Guidelines

If you would like to apply, please send your resume including your current GPA and total number of credits to Tracy Sharpe-Rice, Stay-in-School Program Manager by email at Tracy.Sharpe-Rice@usdoj.gov or by fax at (202) 353-0775.

After a tentative selection has been made, students must complete the required security paperwork to initiate a name and fingerprint check. No final offers may be made to students until final approval is given. It normally takes four to six weeks after the completed paperwork is submitted to receive final approval.
