Who We Are

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is an agency of the U.S. Department of Transportation, headquartered in Washington, D.C. with field offices in all states across the United States. We administer a multi-billion dollar Federal-aid highway program through partnerships with each of the State Departments of Transportation, local transportation agencies, metropolitan planning organizations, highway associations, private industry, academic institutions, and other Federal agencies.

The FHWA Mission

Our mission is to continually improve the quality of our nation's highway system and its intermodal connections. For more than 100 years, FHWA has concentrated on building and repairing the highway infrastructure. In the last decade of the 20th century, FHWA's role expanded dramatically and is now reflected in five strategic goals: Safety, Mobility, Productivity, Human and Natural Environment, and National Security.

The Organization - FHWA consists of:

  • Washington Headquarters,
  • Resource Centers (Baltimore, Maryland; Atlanta, Georgia; Olympia Fields, Illinois; and San Francisco, California),
  • Federal-aid Division Offices (One in each State, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico), and
  • Federal Lands Highway Division Offices (Sterling, Virginia; Denver, Colorado; and Vancouver, Washington).

    FHWA Programs for Students and College Graduates

    The Professional Development Program (PDP) is a structured two-year entry-level career development program that includes approximately 12 months of on-the-job experience in an FHWA sponsoring office, approximately 10 months for developmental assignments at other FHWA or partner/customer agencies, and 2 months for critical skills development at a Professional Development Academy. We are looking for college graduates with a bachelor's or master's degree to serve in a variety of transportation-related disciplines.

    Student Career Experience (Cooperative Education) Program: Gain valuable work experience directly related to your academic field of study and get paid for it! Positions are open to high school, undergraduate, and graduate students nationwide in a variety of occupations. You may be eligible for permanent employment under this program after successfully completing your education and meeting work requirements.

    Student Temporary Employment: Openings for temporary employment range from summer opportunities to positions that continue throughout your academic experience.
