Federal Bureau of Prisons

Do Your Career Justice With the Bureau of Prisons

WHAT IS THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF PRISONS?

Congress established the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) as a component of the Department of Justice in 1930. Its mission is to protect society by confining offenders in the controlled environments of prison and community-based facilities that are safe, humane, and appropriately secure, while providing work and other self-improvement opportunities to assist offenders in becoming law-abiding citizens.

The BOP is organized nationally into six regions, (South Central, Southeast, North Central, Northeast, Western, and Mid-Atlantic), and has its headquarters (Central Office) in Washington, D.C. The regional offices currently support over 100 institutions nationwide.

WHAT TYPE OF STUDENT EMPLOYMENT IS AVAILABLE TO ME WITH THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF PRISONS?

We offer two types of student employment, the Student Temporary Employment Program and the Student Career Experience Program. Both are year-round programs and appointments may be made at any time during the year, including summer. You may work a full- or a part-time schedule. There are no limitations on the number of hours you may work per week, but your work schedule should not interfere with your academic schedule. Opportunities may be available at BOP institutions and offices nationwide.

The Student Temporary Employment Program includes general student internships, summer aid, legal and psychology internships, and the Stay-in-School Program. These appointments are not to exceed one year. With the exception of the legal and psychology intern positions, your employment does not have to be related to your academic program. The Student Temporary Employment Program is designed to provide interested students with work experience as they explore their career interests and options.

The Student Career Experience Programis designed for students who have a strong interest in working for the BOP or the Federal government upon graduation. The Career Experience Program is a more formal integration of academic interests and productive work experiences, in that your academic major must be related to your job assignment.

In order to participate in these programs, you must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment at an accredited school in a degree-seeking academic or vocational program (professional, graduate, baccalaureate, two year associate, vocational/technical certificate, or high school diploma program), and taking at least a half-time course load.

ARE THESE PAID POSITIONS?

Our Student Employment Program consists of paid positions. Salaries range from GS-1 to GS-11, depending on your level of education and any professional work experience you may have. For exact salaries, visit http://www3.opm.gov/oca/01tables/GSannual/index.htm.

WHEN ARE STUDENT EMPLOYMENT POSITIONS AVAILABLE?

Positions are available year round; however, it is best to begin your employment search at the beginning of the fall semester. We invite you to visit our web page www.bop.gov for a complete listing of specific locations and areas of interest. You may contact these facilities directly. Inquire about Student Employment vacancies with the servicing Personnel Office.

If you need additional information, please contact the Student Employment Coordinator, Saralynn Cauley, at scauley@bop.gov.
