National Archives and Records Administration

The History Channel Unabridged

[agency logo]

Welcome to the National Archives and Records Administration! NARA is an independent Federal agency that helps preserve our nation's history by overseeing the management of all Federal records. Our mission is to ensure ready access to the essential evidence that documents the rights of American citizens, the actions of Federal officials, and the national experience. We must make it easy for citizens to access this essential evidence, regardless of the location of the documentation or of the people using it. We hope that providing electronic public access to more and more of our records and services, we will better meet your information needs.

NARA offers three types of employment programs for students, with positions available at our Washington, DC and College Park, MD locations. They are the Student Temporary Employment Program, the Student Career Employment Program, and our Voluntary Internship Program.

Under the Student Temporary Employment Program, a student is appointed for a period not-to-exceed 1 year. The appointment may be extended without limitation provided the student continues to meet the definition of student. There are no specific requirements in regard to the academic program being pursued. The student does not gain competitive civil service status from this appointment and may not be converted non-competitively to a permanent position.

The Student Career Employment Program provides work experience that is directly related to the student's educational program and career goals. A formal agreement must be established between the agency, the educational institution, and the student. Periods of attendance at school are combined with periods of work at NARA. This program provides for non-competitive conversion to career/career-conditional employment after receiving a diploma or degree. For more information on this program please contact Brenda Cooley at (301) 713-7010 x249.

Additionally, NARA invites undergraduate and graduate level students to submit applications for its Voluntary Internship Program. While the program is available to students regardless of major, these internships offer exceptional opportunities to students in history, American studies, political science, library science, and other related disciplines, who wish to gain firsthand experience in archives and history-related work, as well as an invaluable reference for future employment. There are also specific internship listings that may appeal to students in business, computer science, architecture, English, engineering, and construction management. To learn more about this program, please visit www.nara.gov/professional/intern/intern.html.

For more information about our student employment programs please contact Bob Coren at (301) 713-6800 x322 or via e-mail at bob.coren@arch2.nara.gov
