The Naval Research Laboratory

At the Leading Edge of Innovative Research

[agency logo]

The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Navy's corporate laboratory, has a tradition of national and international leadership in many areas of research and development important to the Navy and the Nation. NRL is at the leading edge of innovative research encompassing most areas of the physical and chemical sciences including plasma physics, electronics and electronic warfare, materials, optical, and radiation sciences, acoustics, remote sensing, atmospheric and aerospace sciences, component technology, numerical modeling, artificial intelligence, ocean sciences, marine meteorology, and geosciences.

NRL's main site is located on the eastern bank of the Potomac River in southern Washington, D.C. In addition to satellite facilities at Stennis Space Center in Mississippi and at Monterey, California, NRL has field sites located in Maryland, Virginia, and Colorado.

The Student Programs are tailored to high school, undergraduate, and graduate students to provide employment opportunities and work experience in naval research. These programs are designed to attract applicants for student and full professional employment in fields such as engineering, physics, mathematics, and computer sciences. The student employment programs are designed to help students and educational institutions gain a better understanding of NRL's research, its challenges, and its opportunities. Employment programs for students include the following:

Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) - Provides study related, fully paid employment for high school, undergraduate, and graduate students. Students must be a US citizen, attend a qualifying educational institution on at least a half-time basis, and maintain a 2.5 GPA.

Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP) - Enables high school, undergraduate, and graduate students to earn a salary while continuing their studies, and offers them valuable work experience. Students must be at least 16 years of age, a US citizen, and attend a qualifying educational institution on at least a half-time basis.

Summer Intern Program - Provides exposure to career opportunities, people, places, and situations in the work environment. Students must be at least 16 years of age, a US citizen, and attending a qualifying educational institution. Competition for summer employment is extremely keen, and candidates are given priority consideration based on demonstrated academic achievement and applicable work experience. Summer Intern candidates must file an application by the second Friday in February.

Scientific and Engineering Apprentice Program (SEAP) - NRL participates in SEAP during the summer in cooperation with George Washington University and as part of the Department of Defense Science and Engineering Apprentice Program. Designed to provide high ability secondary school students with a better understanding or research, the program allows students to spend eight weeks working full-time on unclassified tasks. Applications for the SEAP Program are available through George Washington University. Applications should be requested from: Mary Phillips-Program Director, SEAP/GWU-Science & Engineering Apprentice Program, 707 22nd Street, NW, Staughton Hall 104, Washington, DC 20052.

Student Volunteers - The Student Volunteer Program helps students gain valuable experience by allowing them to voluntarily perform educationally related work at NRL. Student volunteers must be at least 16 years of age and must obtain a work permit if under the age of 18.
