In 1975, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) was created to take over the regulatory functions of the former Atomic Energy Commission. Over the past twenty-five years, the mission of the NRC has been to regulate the Nation's civilian use of byproduct, source, and special nuclear materials to ensure adequate protection of public health and safety, to promote the common defense and security, and to protect the environment.

The NRC's scope of responsibility includes regulation of: commercial nuclear power plants; research, test, and training reactors; fuel cycle facilities; medical, academic, and industrial uses of nuclear materials; and the transport, storage, and disposal of nuclear materials and waste.

TECHNICAL POSITIONS (Engineering, Physical Science): Your role as a Summer Intern or Co-op may be learning the NRC's procedures for evaluating license applications for nuclear reactors, issuing licenses, and regulating site selection, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning of a facility. You may work on licensing and inspection activities associated with nuclear fuel cycle facilities, uses of nuclear material, safeguarding of nuclear material, management and disposal of low-and high-level radioactive nuclear waste, and decontamination and decommissioning of facilities and sites.

NON-TECHNICAL POSITIONS (IT, IM, Mass Communication, Law): As a law clerk, you may work on nuclear reactor and nuclear materials licensing cases. As a communications assistant, you may assess internal and external communications. If your major is in Information Technology or Information Management, you might work on website design and maintenance, database design and maintenance, or supporting NRC's infrastructure (local and wide area network).

ADMINISTRATIVE POSITIONS (Accounting, Human Resources, Communications, Business): You may be involved in assessing the skills of potential employees or assist in the budget formulation for the agency. You may work on a major contract or analyze the diversity of the workforce.

Both types of positions may be located in our Headquarters Office in Rockville, Maryland or in one of our regional offices which include King of Prussia, PA, Atlanta, GA, Lisle, IL, or Arlington, TX.
