U.S. Department of State

The Most Interesting Work … in the World

[agency logo]

The U.S. Department of State is the official international relations arm of the President of the United States. Our mission is to administer U.S. foreign policy and maintain diplomatic relations throughout the world. We offer paid and unpaid (volunteer) student programs that are excellent preparation for future careers in the Department of State, for both the Civil Service and the Foreign Service.

The Department's Internship Program offers employment opportunities, mostly volunteer, throughout the year both domestic and abroad. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen in good academic standing at an accredited institution, have completed at least his/her sophomore year of studies prior to beginning the internship, and be returning to school the semester following the completion of the internship.

Whether it's attending the Dalai Lama's birthday party, assisting Americans in distress abroad, or working on projects involving budgets or information systems, internships with the U.S. Department of State provide exciting, diverse opportunities for students in nearly all majors.

Internship applications must be postmarked or hand delivered by the appropriate deadlines:

Summer Internship - November 1
Fall Internship - March 1
Spring Internship - July 1

In addition to internships, there are numerous other exciting and challenging paid student program opportunities at the Department of State. They include: Cooperative Education, Foreign Affairs/Graduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship, Presidential Management Intern, Stay-In-School, and our Summer Clerical programs.
