USDA Forest Service
Rocky Mountain Research Station

Working to Accelerate Solutions to Natural Resource Problems

The USDA Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station (RMRS) is one of eight Forest Service research facilities that make up the most extensive natural resource research organization in the world. Headquartered at the foot of the Rockies in Fort Collins, Colorado, the Station maintains 14 field laboratories within a 14-state territory.

RMRS recruits students during the summer field season to assist with a wide variety of natural resources research projects. They work and train along-side scientists and other professionals at field and laboratory locations in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming. Jobs include work in the following areas:

  • Resource inventory and monitoring
  • Restoration of lands disturbed by mining, overgrazing and other activities
  • Water, riparian and aquatic ecosystems
  • Vegetation ecology and management
  • Relationships between people and natural resources
  • The role of human culture in ecosystems
  • Insects, disease, fire, and other disturbances
  • Wildlife and fish
  • Air quality
  • Wilderness ecosystems

Applications for summer employment are accepted year round through the Automated Temporary Employment Program (www.fs.fed.us/people/employ).

Opportunities also exist for entering the Student Cooperative Education Program. The Forest Service can pay for education expenses, transportation to and from work sites, and other related expenses. Students may be assigned a permanent position at the time of graduation. For more information, contact your university's career services office.
