NRL is a campus-like complex of diverse scientific facilities, with a staff of more than 2,500 researchers, engineers, technicians and support personnel. Overall Laboratory management is under the direction of a Navy officer and civilian research director. The internal organization is organized into five directorates, four of which conduct scientific research, and the Naval Center for Space Technology.

Mission - NRL is the Navy's corporate laboratory. Learn more about our mission, our management and our role in the Navy community.

History - Sometimes called the Father of Modern Invention, Thomas Edison conceived the idea of "a great research laboratory" which led to the creation of NRL in the early 1920s. Rich in its history, the Laboratory may be one his greatest legacies.

Commanding Officer - Biography of CAPT David M. Schubert, NRL's 34th Commanding Officer.

Director of Research - Biography of Dr. John Montgomery, the sixth NRL Director of Research since the position was created in 1949.

Reserve Program - Naval reservists who are experts in their scientific and technical fields and are experienced in Fleet operations and technical project management support science and technology at NRL.

Inspector General - The IG handles audits and investigations relating to NRL programs and operations; promotes economy, efficiency, and effectiveness in the administration of these programs; and manages the Laboratory's fraud, waste and abuse program.
