Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholars Program
Application Deadline: January 7, 2005
The scholars program brings talented Latino, African American, Asian/Pacific Islander and American Indian/Alaska Native college seniors and recent graduates to Washington, DC, where they work in congressional offices and learn about health policy.  Through the nine-week program (May 24 - July 29, 2005), scholars gain knowledge about federal legislative procedure and health policy issues, while further developing their critical thinking and leadership skills.

This annual survey of employers provides detailed insights into trends in employer-based health coverage, including changes in premiums, employee contributions, cost-sharing policies and other relevant information. The 2004 survey included 3,017 randomly selected public and private firms with three or more employees and was conducted jointly by the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Health Research and Educational Trust.

Prescription Drug Trends Fact Sheet
This two-page fact sheet, updated in October 2004, provides trend data for prescription drug expenditures and the key factors that contribute to rising prescription spending: increases in utilization and prices, and changes in drug use from older drugs to newer higher-priced drugs.

One survey shows all states plan more Medicaid cost-containment actions in FY2005 and the second shows that after recent gains, securing Medicaid and SCHIP coverage is more difficult for low-income families in 23 states.

New Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured reports show that between 2000 and 2003 the number of uninsured rose 5.1 million, with the number of uninsured children dropping due to Medicaid and SCHIP coverage and the number of uninsured adults rising due to a decline in employer coverage.

A new report reviews more than 40 studies on the role of media in the nation's dramatically increasing rates of childhood obesity and concludes children who spend the most time with media are more likely to be overweight.




Statehealthfacts.org Has a New Look and Contains New Data

Updates have been made to more than 78 topics, including health insurance premiums and coverage, providing trend information for the 44 states that had declines in employer-based health insurance coverage between 2000 and 2003.
