NIH Roadmap: Re-Engineering the Clinical Research Enterprise Regional Translational Research Centers Initiative

One of the proposed NIH Roadmap initiatives is the establishment of Regional Translational Research Centers (RTRCs). These centers will increase interactions between basic and clinical scientists and accelerate the translational development of new drugs, biomarkers, and treatment strategies from the laboratory bench to clinical testing. New centers will provide essential core infrastructure and support, including specialized cores that provide expertise in biostatistics, clinical pharmacology, pharmacogenetics, and genetics.

RTRC Planning Grants--Request for Applications

Based on feedback from hundreds of translational research stakeholders, the RTRC Working Group prepared an RFA for planning grants for RTRCs (released on October 1, 2004). Applicants will comprise self-assembled groups of institutions interested in conceptualizing and designing RTRCs.

You are welcome to e-mail queries on this RFA to nihrtrccomments@mail.nih.gov or to participate in a live videoconference, during which a panel will answer participants' questions. Please email queries you would like addressed during the videoconference before that event.

Videoconference details:

    November 10, 2004
    1:00 p.m.-2:30 p.m. EST
    6707 Democracy Blvd., Suite 401
    Bethesda, MD
  • To attend in person, e-mail pienm@nccam.nih.gov.
  • To participate via video- or teleconference, contact the NIH Videodesk (301-594-8433 or videodesk@list.nih.gov) by November 2.
  • The videoconference will be archived on this site for those unable to participate.

RTRC Planning Meeting

On July 16, 2004, the RTRC Working Group hosted a 1-day planning meeting in Bethesda, MD, to garner feedback on translational research, with a particular focus on the RTRC initiative. This initiative is one of several endeavors that fall under the NIH Roadmap theme, "Re-Engineering the Clinical Research Enterprise." The meeting drew nearly 60 external experts and 30 NIH representatives offering a range of backgrounds and diverse perspectives on translational research.

RTRC Interim Report

In June 2004, the RTRC Working Group developed an Interim Report outlining the implementation of RTRCs. These centers will provide NIH-funded investigators with the resources needed for state-of-the art, safe, and cost-effective translational research.

Comments or queries on RTRC activities may be sent to nihrtrccomments@mail.nih.gov.
