Hal Stratton
Chairman, Consumer Product Safety Commission

Picture of Chairman Hal StrattonHal Stratton, Chairman of the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), heads the federal agency responsible for protecting the public against unreasonable risks of injuries and deaths associated with consumer products. Mr. Stratton was nominated as Chairman of the CPSC by President George W. Bush and he was confirmed by the U.S. Senate for that position on July 25, 2002. He will serve a term that expires in October of 2006.

Mr. Stratton was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and is an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation. He holds degrees in geology and law from the University of Oklahoma.

After law school, Mr. Stratton served in the U.S. Army and then moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico to enter into the private practice of law. He served in the New Mexico House of Representatives from 1979 through 1986 and as New Mexico attorney general from 1987 through 1990. He practiced law in Albuquerque from 1991 to 2002. He is admitted to the bar in New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma and Texas. He has argued cases in many federal and state jurisdictions including the U.S. Supreme Court.

Mr. Stratton has served on the Western Conference of the Council of State Governments, the National Conference of State Legislators, the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws, the New Mexico Judicial Council and the BLM Citizens Advisory Committee (Albuquerque district). While serving as Attorney General, Mr. Stratton co-authored Office of the Attorney General: History, Powers & Responsibilities, 1845-1990 and Report of the Attorney General: Crime in New Mexico.

Mr. Stratton is married and has two daughters, ages 9 and 5 and they currently reside in Potomac, Maryland.
