LSC President Helaine M. Barnett Announces Appointment of LSC Task Force on Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In an effort to determine how best LSC can help its recipients address the difficulties recruiting and retaining staff attorneys that have enormous law school debt, LSC President Helaine M. Barnett has announced the appointment of an LSC Task Force on Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP). A small group of individuals who have extensive experience and knowledge in LRAP have agreed to serve on the Task Force. The Task Force will help LSC design an LRAP Pilot Program that will be the most useful to LSC recipients with staff or applicants for employment who are in need of loan repayment assistance. The Task Force will also help in determining the most effective way to collect and analyze the data necessary to determine the Pilot Program’s usefulness in the recruitment and retention of local program staff.

The Task Force will meet at LSC headquarters in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, August 25th.

According to the American Bar Association most law school graduates have a cumulative debt from undergraduate and law school that exceeds $80,000. In a 2001 survey of third year law students 66% of the respondents reported that law school debt prevented them from considering a public interest or government job.

In December of 2003 LSC surveyed all of its recipient programs to determine if the large student debt carried by staff attorneys had an effect on recruitment and retention. Fifty seven percent of responding recipient stated that law school debt has a serious impact on their ability to recruit qualified staff attorneys. Thirty three percent of the responding recipients believe that law school debt is a serious impediment to retaining qualified staff attorneys. The full report of the survey can be viewed below:
