This course presents an introduction to the roles and responsibilities of FWS personnel as they relate to Native American Trust Responsibilities.
College Credit: 1 semester hour
Who should attend: FWS personnel involved with Trust responsibilities.
Course Length: 2 days; 16 hours
Objectives:
- Describe the history of the FWS and the Federal/Indian Relationship;
- Identify key provisions of the FWS Native American Policy, the Self-Determination Act (1975), and the Self-Governance Act (1994);
- List pivotal Resource-oriented Indian Case Laws;
- Describe the four basic themes that support the concept of Trust Responsibility;
- List several characteristics of Native American culture that should be considered when working with tribes; and
- Describe tribal homelands, Indian reservation land-ownership categories, types of tribal governments, and major Indian organizations.
