Assessing Childhood Obesity
Announcing - A new tool for pediatric obesity assessment designed specifically for the
convenience of health care professionals:
The Shape Up America! Pediatric BMI Assessment Tool
This interactive tool permits health care professionals to calculate BMI and plot BMI percentile on the CDC
growth charts for children ages 2 to 20. The user can enter up to six sets of data for a single individual and
the graph can be printed out for filing purposes.
Many states are mandating measurement of BMI in preschoolers and school children. Our goal is to make the
calculation and plotting of BMI as convenient as possible. We encourage health care professionals to visit our
Professional Center for more information on the assessment and treatment of obesity.

On December
8, 2003, Shape Up America! hosted an international conference that addressed
the origins of childhood obesity from the earliest stages of life, starting
with pregnancy and extending through the infancy and toddler period.
In addition to providing data on what our youngest children are eating
based on the Feeding Infants and Toddlers Study (FITS) -- a landmark
study sponsored by the Gerber Products Company -- speakers discussed
the impact of intrauterine factors, breastfeeding and other parental
feeding practices and feeding styles on the subsequent development of
obesity.
The proceedings of this conference are being prepared for publication
and an announcement will be made on this website once they are available.
