Research Training
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) provides an array of intramural and extramural predoctoral and postdoctoral educational and career development grants and opportunities in health services research. In addition, the Agency supports the development of health services research infrastructure in emerging centers of excellence and works with Federal and academic partners to develop innovative curricula and educational models. The following is a list of training programs and support mechanisms with a brief description of each and further resources where available. Intramural Opportunities
Summer Intern Program
Short-term summer internships for undergraduate and graduate-
level students.
Kerr White Visiting Scholars Program
Intramural opportunities for junior, mid-career level, and senior
researchers.
Grant Programs
Institutional-level Grants
Research Infrastructure Development Initiatives
Grants designed to support the planning and development of
health services research in traditionally minority-serving institutions
(M-RISP-R24) and institutions in states which do not receive
significant health services research funding (BRIC-R24).
Institutional Training Awards (T32)
National Research Service Award (NRSA) grants to institutions
for predoctoral and postdoctoral training. Individuals interested in
obtaining pre- and or postdoctoral research training in HSR apply
directly to specific programs of interest to them.
Institutional Training Innovation Incentive Awards (R25)
Provides support for the design and implementation of new
models of health services research training.
Individual-level Grants
Pre-doctoral—Health Services Research Dissertation Awards (R36)
Dissertation grants for doctoral candidates.
Pre-doctoral—Fellowship Awards For Minority Students (F31)
Designed to enhance racial and ethnic diversity in the health
services research sciences.
Post-doctoral—Individual Postdoctoral Fellowship Awards (F32)
Available to applicants who have completed their clinical or
research doctoral degrees.
Career Development—Independent Scientist Awards (KO2)
Career development support for promising new investigators.
Career Development—Mentored Clinical Scientist Development
Awards (K08)
Health services research career preparation support for out-
standing clinicians.
