arrow Just type in your key word(s), like mad cow disease (no need for quotes, we phrase-search by default), and select Begin Search
arrow You’ll get results ranked in relevancy clusters, or grouped in a way most likely to match your search query.
arrow Unlike many search engines, our results are retrieved in real time, so it could take a minute.
arrow progress bar Our progress bar will time out in 50 seconds. This means that if a particular database is running slow, you may not get all those results during that search session.

arrow Full-text searching is available when supported by the agency’s database.
arrow You’ll know the full-text PDF is available when you see the PDF icon PDF icon.
arrow "And" and "Or" operators are generally supported (for example, searching frogs or toads returns results with either or both words).
arrow There’s no need to use quotes for phrases – we phrase-search by default.
arrow Wildcard character * (asterisk) is supported in several, but not all, databases (for example, ecolog* will find both ecological and ecology).
arrow Search is not case sensitive (for example, RAIN, Rain, and rain will produce the same results).

More about your results

arrow Results are linked to expanded information.
arrow Default results are returned in QuickRank™ order.
arrow Results may be displayed by Agency source, if desired.
arrow Total number of search results may be restricted by the database.

Additional QuickRank™ Features

arrow Our special QuickRank™ formula filters results, sending you the most relevant returns.
arrow This means that the number of QuickRank returns may differ from the number of raw returns from the individual agency listing, which aren’t filtered by QuickRank.
arrow Results will be returned in relevancy clusters : very high relevancy indicates very high relevancy, high relevancy indicates high relevancy, medium relevancy indicates medium high relevancy, low relevancy indicates low relevancy.
arrow Our QuickRank filter is based on placement of key words: If your key word is not in a prime location in the document, likely the result won’t be ranked.
arrow Your results will contain top tier databases in terms of relevancy. But, you can also visit the Results by Source for further investigation.
arrow If your search only returns three (3) or fewer ranked results, we’ll send you directly to our display by agency.
arrow We’ll be enhancing our ranking system soon — keep a look out for science.gov 3.0.
