2004 U.S. EPA/NGWA Fractured Rock Conference

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is co-sponsoring the 2004 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)/National Ground Water Association (NGWA) Fractured Rock Conference: State of the Science and Measuring Success in Remediation, in Portland , Maine , September 13-15, 2004 . The objective of the conference is to assess the current state of knowledge regarding the remediation of contaminated ground water in fractured bedrock. Cleaning up contamination in fractured rock is one of the most difficult challenges facing engineers, scientists, regulators, and responsible parties tasked with the cleanup. The conference will provide valuable information that decision makers can use to more effectively deal with this difficult problem.

USGS Scientists Give Keynote Talks

  • Allen Shapiro, USGS, will speak on “Recent advances in characterizing ground-water flow and chemical transport in fractured rock: From cores to kilometers”
  • Frederick L. Pailet, USGS (now with the University of Maine ), will speak on “Geophysical characterization of fractured rock aquifers: Accounting for scale effects and putting hydrology into the geophysics”
