USGS Sponsors Special Session on Environmental Impacts of Petroleum Production at the 2004 Annual AAPG Convention

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is sponsoring a special session on "Exploration and Production (E&P;): Environmental Issues and Best Management Practices: Impacts on Water, Soil, and Ecosystems (O-19)" at the Annual American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Convention in Dallas, Texas, April 18-21, 2004. The objective of the session, which is part of the Convention's Theme 3 (Environmental Issues), is to present information on environmental issues associated with petroleum exploration and production to the resource managers and petroleum scientists. Scientists will present papers on the impacts of petroleum production on water, soil, and ecosystems; case studies of how to minimize environmental impacts from petroleum production; and natural and engineered remediation of the impacted areas.

• The influence of microbial populations and hydrology on natural biodegradation of subsurface crude-oil contamination: Barbara A. Bekins, Frances Hostettler, Ean Warren, William Herkelrath, Geoff Delin, Hedeff Essaid, and Isabelle Cozzarelli (85770 INVITED) – Dr. Bekins will speak on long-term research conducted on the fate and transport of a crude oil spill at Bemidji, Minnesota.
