Visual Identity System
This web site provides basic guidance for use of the U.S. Geological Survey Visual Identity System (VIS) including the
trademarked USGS identifier
by non-USGS organizations. Anyone creating USGS products must get specifications for the products from their USGS contact.
The VIS was developed to visually reinforce who USGS is and what it does. The following are key elements to remember when using the USGS identifier:
Use approved artwork only. Ask your USGS contact for images files in a format appropriate for your product.
Don't alter the USGS identifier.
The identifier may appear only in green (PMS348), black, or white.
The Identifier is trademarked and must be used in accordance with VIS specifications.
For additional information on use of the USGS Identifier, see the following:
*Trademark statement - The USGS identifier is trademarked. The USGS Visual Identity System,
including the identifier itself, is reserved for use by the USGS and its official partners and cooperators only.
Use of the identifier by other entities is prohibited without prior written permission. The identifier may not be used
for commercial purposes and may not be provided to a commercial source for reproduction except as authorized by
the USGS. If you would like more information about the USGS Visual Identity System, you may contact
