Science Information System (SIS)
U.S. Geological Survey
Biological Resources Division

The Science Information System (SIS) was established by the Chief Biologist, Biological Resources Division - (BRD), to provide rapid access to BRD Scientific Areas and Programs data at the project level. The SIS is designed to meet the information needs of scientists and resource managers -- both within the BRD and in partner organizations, client agencies, and interest groups. The SIS provides information at the project level for BRD programs. A project is the smallest segment into which BRD science is divided; it is the level at which hypotheses are tested or specific questions are addressed. A project has a specific objective, which does not change over the life of the project, and a finite duration (i.e., well-defined start and end dates), and results in a specific end product or products. Projects are technically distinct in scope, objective, and duration from other science efforts, with which they may be aggregated for financial, administrative, or contracting purposes.

There are two web sites for SIS: SIS (at USGS) (which is the main web site) and SIS (at USDA). SIS (at USDA) only provides a means of querying SIS information which was derived from the SIS database located at USGS. SIS (at USGS) provides all of the primary functions for the SIS database, such as updating, creating, searching, viewing, printing, and reviewing.

SIS (Science Information System) has been replaced by BASIS+ (Budget and Science Information System Plus) which is an internal program (for USGS employees only) located within the USGS website. SIS (Science Information System) will continue to be available to SIS Users though for the foreseeable future. This will ensure that SIS Users will continue to have access to their previously created SIS data. However, not all data within the system is readily being updated.

ATTENTION:
ALL new SIS users must first register as new users by going to:
Not a SIS user yet, but want to become one? [SIS New User] (for USGS use only)

Note: Please do NOT use the Back or Forward buttons while working within this SIS website
unless you are explicitly told to do so on that web page.

SIS looks best when viewed with Netscape 4.0 or later and Internet Explorer 4.0 or later.
