Employee uses mobile data collection tools in the field

NCGC Hosts Mobile Data Collection Devices & Geospatial Data Warehouse Summit

In the future, an NRCS employee will be in the field with a suite of integrated tools and data on a tablet computer with a wireless connection to a GPS, data and other information. The employee will begin an inventory and the system would pre-populate the electronic "form" with the information for that site/area such as location, soils, vegetation, elevation, landform, remote sensing analysis...data they had loaded from the warehouse. They would complete the inventory or assessment and upload the data to the warehouse. A field conservationist would use some of the same inventory and warehouse functionality along with Toolkit for planning. NRCS is bringing experts in each field together to outline the requirements for integration of mobile data collection with the Geospatial Data Warehouse.

National Resources Inventory

NCGC assists NRCS National Resources Inventory data collectors in the field. NCGC is currently supporting a national Remote Data Collection effort utilizing photo interpretation, an Onsite Rangeland Study in 17 states, and providing Remote Data Collection training via NetMeeting.  The NRI Help Desk is available as a source for instructions, announcements and more to aid in data collection. For information, contact Jerry Harlow, Resources Inventory Support Branch Leader at 817-509-3340.
