Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge is one of over 540 refuges scattered throughout the United States. This refuge was established in 1930 as a refuge and breeding ground for birds.

Salt Plains NWR is home to approx. 312 species of birds, 35 species of mammals, as well as countless reptiles, amphibians, plants and invertebrates throughout the year.

The hundreds of refuges spread across the nation all work together for a common goal to provide habitat for wildlife, from the most endangered to the most common animals.

Salt Plains is one of 9 Oklahoma National Wildlife Refuges. Oklahoma is part of Region 2, which also includes Texas, New Mexico and Arizona.

The heritage of the national wildlife refuge system didn't show up overnight; it has taken over 100 years to create the largest acreage of land, set aside for wildlife, on the planet. In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt created the National Wildlife Refuge System. The first refuge was Pelican Island NWR in Florida. In Roosevelt's presidency, he created 51 refuges. Now, there are over 540 national wildlife refuges to protect animals and habitat.
